Nyerere National Park is a picturesque, unique and pristine safari destination that offers the best wildlife adventure and an amazing introduction to unspoilt Africa. The park has the greatest diversity of safari activities some of which include game drives, bird watching, walking safaris and boat safaris. The boat safari, in particular, really sets this park apart from the others. The many waterways in the park provide an excellent natural setting for boat safaris, both for big game viewing and bird watching. Its wildlife is spectacular, with some of the largest population of mammals and reptiles in Africa, including buffaloes, elephants, lion prides, leopard, hyena, kudu, eland, impala, bush buck as well as hippo and huge Nile crocodiles in the river and lakes. The birdlife here is also phenomenal with over 400 recorded species. The most popular mode of getting to Nyerere National Park is by road, typically starting and ending either in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, with the choice of vehicles being a 4x4 Landcruiser Jeep or the less costly Safari Minibus (Tour Van). The trip from Dar es salaam to Nyerere Park typically takes 5 to 6 hours depending on which Camp has been booked for your stay. The benefit of a safari by road is the typically lower cost as well as getting to see the traditional way the native people live and work within the rural villages in Tanzania. The downside is that stretches of road on the route are in below average condition.
Flying Safaris offer the convenience of reaching Nyerere National Park within an hour from Dar es Salaam. There are numerous departure flights connecting from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Arusha that land at different accommodations or public access airstrips in Nyerere National Park ( formerly known as Selous Game Reserve ). Upon arrival at the airstrip in the park, guests are received and transfered to their respective Camp or Lodge in time for lunch. Game drives are provided in 4x4 Safari Vehicles by the property.
Safari Tour Minibus / Van and the 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser Jeeps are two basic types of Safari vehicles used in Tanzania for wildlife and adventure safaris.
